Few musicians in recent decades can lay claim to the caliber of credits held by Grammy-nominated guitarist, Rick Vito. His stellar slide and lead guitar work has enriched the recordings and performances of such legendary Rock & Roll Hall of Fame rock and blues artists as Bob Seger, Jackson Browne, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, Roy Orbison, Stevie Nicks, Graham Nash, Bonnie Raitt, Todd Rundgren, Timothy B. Schmidt, and scores of others. To date he has appeared on over one-hundred released recordings, and his haunting slide solo on Seger’s “Like a Rock,” has been heard by millions as the guitar voice on the Chevrolet truck TV commercial ads over a ten year period.
Perhaps best known as a member of the legendary supergroup Fleetwood Mac (1987-1991), Rick brought back a passionate, bluesy quality to the band’s music. His original songs and vocal performances are featured on their albums, “Behind the Mask,” and “The Chain.” He also appears on the band’s “Greatest Hits,” “The Very Best of Fleetwood Mac” CDs, and the live concert DVD, “Tango in the Night.”
Rick’s debut solo album, “King of Hearts,” released in 1992 on Atlantic Records, was praised in Guitar Player magazine for its “…dazzling collection of fiery slide guitar driven songs,” and also featured the single, “Desiree,” a smoldering duet with former bandmate, Stevie Nicks. His voice and guitar were again captured at their finest in his second solo work, 1998’s “Pink & Black,” this time in a more traditional blues-rock setting.
In 2000 Rick signed with the German-based, Hypertension Music label, which released an incredible third solo CD, “Lucky Devils.” Rick took his band to Europe where he appeared on the now classic "Ohne Filter" TV show, which was released on DVD in 2004 as, “Rick Vito Live in Concert.”
Rick’s CD, “Crazy Cool,” was released in 2003 in Europe followed by a sellout tour, which also included major blues festivals there. A fifth solo CD, “Band Box Boogie,” followed. More in the tradition of jump and swing blues, it includes many show-stopping favorites such as “Blues Town,” “Little Sheba,” and the blistering title track instrumental, “Band Box Boogie,” a salute to Rick’s guitar idols of the swing era.
Rick’s 2006 CD, “Rattlesnake Shake,” is a tour de force for all fans of slide guitar, blues, and rhythm rock. “Complete Slide Guitar with Rick Vito,” an instructional DVD from the Hal Leonard Corporation has also been released worldwide.
Warner Brothers major movie release, “Angel Eyes,” starring Jennifer Lopez, featured Rick’s song, “It’s Two A.M.,” as performed by Alligator Record’s superstar, Shemekia Copeland. For this, Rick received the prestigious W.C. Handy Award (aka Blues Music Award) for “Blues Song of the Year.”
Rick’s endeavors have also included much-heralded world tours with blues and rock icons, Bonnie Raitt and John Fogerty. As producer, Rick also collaborated with “rockabilly filly,” Rosie Flores, resulting in the release of “Speed of Sound,” to uniformly incredible reviews. Rick’s guitar work also appears on recent releases by Delbert McClinton (the Grammy-winning, “Nothing Personal”), Hank Williams Jr., Bonnie Raitt, the Tractors, the Martini Kings, Carl Verheyen, Maria Muldaur, and Bob Seger.
The Dreamworks motion picture, “The Last Castle,” starring Robert Redford, featured Rick in a rare cameo as a military police captain. His songs have also appeared on many TV shows including “Without a Trace,” “Las Vegas,” “Thieves,” “HBO’s ‘Real’ Series,” “Everwood,” and “Memphis Beat.” Rick’s “She’s so Crazy” is featured in the Harrison Ford blockbuster movie, “Firewall.”
Along with his solo projects, in 2008 Rick teamed again with legendary drummer, Mick Fleetwood, to form both the blues-rocking Mick Fleetwood Blues Band featuring Rick Vito, and Maui’s Island Rumours Band, which features some of Hawaii’s most incredible traditional and contemporary musicians. In 2009-2010, "Blue Again," the live DVD from the Mick Fleetwood Blues Band was released in the U.S., Europe and Australia. This exciting video was captured on the band's European tour in Canterbury, England, and features seven Vito compositions. Shortly after its release, it was honored by being nominated for a 2010 Grammy Award in the Best Traditional Blues category. Also released in the same year was “Lucky in Love: The Best of Rick Vito,” a solid overview collection of Rick’s finest recordings to date.
With “Mojo on My Side,” Delta Groove proudly presents Rick Vito’s latest endeavor, which marvelously illustrates his distinctly singular approach to roots music, along with his trademark blues-infused slide guitar.
